State Legislation Alert

Building on the success and proven cost savings to employers of the Asheville Project, pharmacists and pharmaceutical companies are working with state legislatures to incorporate prevention and wellness programs for state employees with diabetes into State Employees’ Insurance programs.  North Dakota is the first state to enact this type of program (HB 1433), and Illinois is currently considering a proposal (SB 811).

While AADE is in favor of such wellness and disease management programs, the North Dakota and Illinois proposals limit the providers of these services to physicians and pharmacists.

You need to be aware of these efforts and work with your legislators and other diabetes organizations to make sure that Diabetes Educators are included in these proposals.  You will need to monitor legislative proposals for insurance and state employee benefits.  Stay in contact with your local and state American Diabetes and American Dietetic Associations to help monitor state legislative activities.

You can monitor state legislative activities on the AADE web site.  Go to the Member Center, sign in, click on “Local and National Advocacy Information”, click on “LegAlert”, and follow the directions for entry into the LegAlert information.

Your AADE Advocacy Committee Grassroots Liaison will provide additional information as it becomes available.
